Description
WW2 US M1 Fixed Bale Front Seam Helmet w/Firestone Liner & McCord Shell NAMEDThe helmet shell is a McCord production front seam with fixed chinstrap bales. The heat stamp appears to be "299B." The shell exhibits little damage and only has minor scuffs and scrapes from age and light use. The paint is almost totally complete and no stress fractures are present.
The liner features a Firestone production stamp, and has non-painted steel A-washers and a khaki suspension, consistent with a 1942/1943 production date. The leather sweatband exhibits some staining and minor damage. The liner is named in 2 places, both to an "E. M. Knoll": an ink stamp on the suspension and another ink stamp on the left side near the chinstrap stud. We have not attempted to research the previous owner. The liner paint is nearly complete and only exhibits some minor scuffing and light scratches, no doubt from use and removal from the shell.
The helmet came to us with a leather liner strap. However, this strap is in very poor condition and at one point was taped together with electrical tape. Replacements, both originals and/or reproductions, are available for purchase from a variety of manufacturers and dealers.
This helmet is one of the cleanest and most complete WW2 production M1s that we have ever come across. Although we can't determine with certainty whether this liner/shell combo are original to one another, given their similar condition and production dates, it is possible that they have been paired with one another since original production/issue.
